The Missing Mounds

Wisconsin once had 15,000 to 20,000 effigy mounds. Only 4,000 mounds remain today. In the Madison area, 80% of 1,500 have been destroyed, including here in Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

Amy Rosebough, an archaeologist with the Wisconsin Historical Society, gives us more context about the scale of the loss of this cultural heritage.

Andi Cloud is a storyteller from the Ho-Chunk nation. Andi shares the significance of the region’s effigy mounds to the Ho-Chunk, the descendants of the mounds’ creators.
