FOPBC’s Restoration and Management (R&M) Committee is looking for some Pheasant Branch Conservancy volunteers to become certified pesticide applicators. We have a few, and we can use more. This year, the R&M Committee has funds for training and testing, and is sponsoring a PAT study group. Having more people trained in herbicide use will greatly increase the effectiveness and safety of our work in the Conservancy. Please consider it.
UW Extension provides training materials and DATCP – Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture,Trade and Consumer Protection – administers the certification exam. The State of Wisconsin has various pesticide-related certifications. For volunteer work in the Conservancy, volunteers usually complete the Commercial Right-of-Way and Natural Areas certification (6.0). “ This category is for those using pesticides for restoration and to maintain natural areas, including preparing land that will be transitioned to a natural area. “(PAT website). At Pheasant Branch, we also need volunteers with Aquatic & Mosquito certification (5.0) for work in the wetland. Maybe you’d like to do both!
If you’re interested in getting certified, here’s what to do:
- E-mail Janet at restoration@pheasantbranch.org with any questions or to let her know you’re interested.
- Order a manual for Right-of-Way and Natural Areas 6.0. The manual comes in two formats: printed manual, or PDF. Choose whichever fits with your preferences. You’ll also get a Training Certificate to present to DATCP at the time of testing.
- Join the study group (optional). We’ll meet at Common Ground at the corner of Branch St and Century Ave from 1-3 every other Monday – January 28, February 11 and 25 and March 11. (If the time doesn’t work for you but you’d like some study buddies, let Janet know at the address in #1.)
- When you’re ready, schedule a date to take the test through DATCP (details will be provided with the study materials) or sign up for a Live Training/Review and take the test at the end of the review session.
- In appreciation, the R&M Committee will reimburse your training costs after you send in the form for payment.
