This past Saturday, April 13th, Quercus conducted a successful spring prescribed burn in 5 areas of Pheasant Branch Conservancy that had not been burned for several years. The first planted 40 acre quadrant (SE corner of the 160 acres) of the restoration was due to be burned in an attempt to manage unwanted invasives and to encourage the more than 200 native seeds in their germination and growth. The adjacent north side of the hill was also burned, along with Shannon Prairie, the SE prairie from the old Dane County parking lot and a narrow strip to the north of that parking lot bordering Pheasant Branch Road. Our Land Manager, Rob Schubert, requested this burn to be done. The new addition burned well in places where there was enough fuel and uninterrupted by grassy areas. The other 4 areas burned very well with plenty of dried fuel material from last seasons growth and a nicely sunny and breezy day. We look forward to these areas to quickly green up with April and May moisture, sun and warmer temperatures.
