What is Phenology?
Phenology is the study of periodic biological phenomena—the “nature’s clock” that governs when the first Sandhill Cranes return to the marsh, when the Prairie Smoke blooms, and when the monarch butterflies begin their migration. By observing these recurring events, we gain critical insights into the health of our local ecosystem and how it responds to changes in the climate and environment over time.
This calendar allows you to follow the flora and fauna of the Conservancy through the year, connecting you to the specific biological milestones that make this watershed a regional resource of biodiversity.
A Partnership for the Future
The calendar is the result of a long-standing partnership between the Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy and Middleton High School. This project provides an “outdoor laboratory” for photography students to master their craft:
- Field Experience: Students spend a semester in the Conservancy learning advanced nature photography techniques and observing the habitats firsthand.
- Professional Judging: A panel of professional photographers evaluates the work, awarding first through third-place prizes each year.
- Local Impact: The winning photographs are selected for publication, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the Conservancy through the eyes of the next generation of stewards.
