Pheasant Branch Hill

Pheasant Branch Hill might resemble the drumlins familiar in our glacial landscape (notably, the nearby Wiscosnin State Capitol building is on a drumlin), but Pheasant Branch Hill is capped with erosion-resistant dolomite rock rather than the glacial till of a drumlin. The view from the hill is stunning, and the effigy mounds on the hill make it easy to imagine people appreciating this spot for thousands of years. Even when much of the area was being farmed, the topography and soils on the hill weren’t conducive for agriculture, allowing a remnant oak savanna and dry prairie to persist.
