Pheasant Branch Conservancy was voted "Best in Madison" for Best Running/Biking Trail back in 2022, and trails have only gotten better!

Running & Hiking in Pheasant Branch Conservancy

The main loop through the Conservancy is an approximately 3-mile multi-use trail on a crushed limestone surface that is reasonably accessible for a natural surface trail. There is a section of boardwalk through the wetland at the south end of the Conservancy, and there are benches along the way to rest and reflect on your Conservancy experience.

The other trails in the Conservancy are foot-traffic only and are grass or dirt surface. They feature more hills and variable footing, and lead to spectacular views and other points of interest.

The Conservancy is primarily managed for the protection and restoration of natural systems. It is important for the public to be able to visit the Conservancy to appreciate its value and to benefit from the experience of being in nature, but to do so in a way that complements the conservation mission. For hikers and runners, this includes:

  • staying on designated trails,
  • respecting seasonal trail closures to protect ground nesting birds, and
  • being mindful of sensitive habitat and cultural sites adjacent to trails.
